An armed man who had barricaded himself in a North Little Rock residence with a victim early this morning was found dead after a North Little Rock officer fired at him, but it is unclear if the man’s fatal injury was self-inflicted or if it was caused by the officer’s shots, according to a report from the department. 

At about 1:55 a.m. this morning, North Little Rock officers responded to the 4700 block of N. Locust Street and found a suspect armed with a firearm and with a victim whom officers quickly removed from the residence.

The officers attempted to make contact with the suspect but the suspect fired gunshots from inside the residence. The suspect began to exit the residence and pointed his firearm toward officers. A North Little Rock officer fired his gun at the suspect. The suspect reentered the residence and officers called in special operations units, including a crisis negotiation team.  

Officers were unable to make contact with the suspect. Members of the North Little Rock SWAT team entered the residence and found the suspect deceased. The police did not know if the suspect’s fatal injury was self-inflicted or if it resulted from the North Little Rock officer’s shots, the report stated.

The officer involved in the incident has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy, the report stated. 

The department has not released the name of the suspect or the officer.

On January 18, 2023, at approximately 1:55a.m., Officers  with the North Little Rock Police Department responded to the 4700 block of N. Locust Street in reference  to a disturbance with a weapon. 

Upon arrival, officers were advised that the suspect involved in the disturbance was inside the residence  and was armed with a firearm. Officers quickly located and removed the victim from the scene and learned that the suspect was the only remaining person inside the residence. Officers set a perimeter around the  residence and began attempting to make contact with the suspect.  

The suspect fired shots from a firearm from inside the residence. The suspect began to exit the residence and pointed a firearm toward officers which resulted in a North Little Rock Officer discharging their service weapon. The suspect then retreated back into the residence.  

Special Operations Units with the North Little Rock Police Department were activated and responded to  the scene along with members of the North Little Rock Crisis Negotiation Team. Members with the Crisis  Negotiation Team continued attempting to establish communication with the suspect. All attempts were  met with negative results.  

Members of the North Little Rock SWAT Team made entry into the residence and located the suspect  deceased. It is unknown at this time if the suspect was fatally wounded by North Little Rock Police or if  the fatal injury was self-inflicted.  

Detectives with the North Little Rock Police Department have been notified and have responded to the  scene to conduct an investigation.  

The officer involved in this incident have been placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with  Departmental Policy.  

The name of the suspect and officer are not being released at this time.  

This is an active and ongoing investigation and it is in the preliminary stages. Additional details  surrounding this incident are still being gathered. Further information will be released when it becomes available.
