Information from the Little Rock Police Department about a Saturday homicide reveals two victims were shot in a gunfight at 5001 West 65th St., the address of the Spanish Jon Apartments.
On July 15, the LRPD reported that one person died from the incident. On Tuesday they identified the victim as 37-year-old Walter Hair Jr., who was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The LRPD later learned a different victim, 39-year-old Derrick Weaver, was transported to a separate hospital with a gunshot wound on his neck.
Detectives determined both victims were involved in the same incident at the same location, according to the latest report. Google shows the Spanish Jon Apartments as temporarily closed. Calls to the apartment office indicate the number is no longer working.
The police report lists Hair Jr. and Weaver as both victims and suspects, indicating the two were shooting at each other. LRPD Spokesperson Mark Edwards said Tuesday a prosecutor has to determine whether the homicide was done in self defense. If so, the death will not be counted in the LRPD yearly homicide data.
No arrests have been made.
As of now, Saturday’s suspected homicide marked the city’s 30th in 2023. One additional officer-involved shooting is not included in that count.
