Little Rock and North Little Rock will combine for a St. Patrick’s Day Parade beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 17.

The route starts at the Clinton Presidential Center on Dean Kumpuris Street, heads west through the River Market, crosses the Main Street Bridge into North Little Rock, and ends at Main and Sixth on the north side.

Prizes will be awarded to the best float ($200), best decorated car, truck or motorcycle ($100), most entertaining group ($100), best dressed walker ($50) and most festive leprechaun ($50).

After the parade, everyone will gather at the Dancing at the Crossroads event at the Arts Scene Gallery and Art Market, 201 Maple St. in the Argenta Historic District.

The event will feature a display of traditional Irish dancing by the McCafferty School of Irish Dance and the O’Donovan School of Irish Dance and Celtic music by the Lyon College Pipe Band from Batesville and the Red River Pipes and Drums Band from Shreveport.

Other local Irish bands and musicians will also perform.

Peggy Loyd, a local Celtic-style musician, is the 2007 parade grand marshal. The event is sponsored by the Irish Cultural Society of Arkansas.

Mario at Hot Springs

Hot Springs continues its traditional of having the World’s Shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade as its fourth annual affair begins at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Bridge Street in the historic district.

Mario Lopez, former star on “Saved by the Bell” and a contestant in last season’s “Dancing With the Stars,” is the celebrity grand marshal. The Sallymacs will provide musical entertainment at 5:30 p.m., and an all-green fireworks display caps everything off, before everyone heads to the local pubs to presumably get green to the gills.

Green day at the Zoo

The Little Rock Zoo has a St. Patrick’s Day celebration planned, complete with everything green: treats, animals and more.

The party runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Learn all about the zoo’s own green animals and hear stories about how some animals are associated with good luck.

Hammond sings

Gospel great Fred Hammond will headline a show on Friday, March 16, at St. Mark Baptist Church.

Hammond will be joined by Chante Moore, Kenny Lattimore and Jonathon Slocumb. The concert begins at 7 p.m., and tickets are $25. Seating is limited; call 663-3955 for ticket availability or more information.

OA and Dale

The Oxford American will premiere of its first-ever Oxford American DVD tonight (Thursday, March 15) at the Riverdale 10 theater, and the after-party at Cornerstone Pub in North Little Rock will feature the legendary rockabilly artist Dale Hawkins.

Hawkins will be releasing his new CD, “Back Down in Louisiana.”

Doors at the Riverdale 10 open at 7 p.m., and the program starts at 7:30 p.m. The Hawkins show across the river will begin about 9 p.m.

Actor and director Ray McKinnon will kick off the premiere by reading “on acting,” his humorous essay from the upcoming Oxford American Southern Movie Issue. The DVD is a “visual mix tape” featuring short films, scenes from essential Southern movies, historic footage and more (see review on page 39).

Tickets are $30, serving as a donation to the nonprofit Oxford American Literary Project, and the price includes admission to the DVD premiere, admission to Hawkins’ show and a free copy of the Southern Movie Issue. Tickets to the Hawkins show only are $15.
