It says a lot about my stage of life that I’d personally rather start this column talking about the upcoming children’s consignment sales than the racy new upscale lingerie store in West Little Rock.
I can still remember a time when that wouldn’t have been the case, though, so I’ll put off my yammering about gently used Gymboree for a second and fill you in on the silver lame booty shorts.
That’s right, I said booty shorts.
Actually, the price tag said booty shorts. I just read it and suppressed a snort. Anyway: Booty shorts of the gold, silver and red sequined variety are among the offerings at Vertige Lingerie (11610 Pleasant Ridge Road), a boutique that opened earlier this month in the little strip mall (ha ha) off Cantrell Road just west of Pleasant Ridge Town Center.
Vertige is not the place to go if you’re in need of everyday foundation garments. No beige bras here, no ma’am. This is the fun stuff: Corsets, teddies, merrywidows, sheer short nighties and sexy bra and panty sets, from lines like Shirley of Hollywood, Intimate Attitudes, Leg Avenue, Betsey Johnson and B. Tempt’d. There are several selections in white that would be appropriate under a wedding dress, and many more in a host of less demure colors and patterns. There’s a decent selection of plus sizes, too. And heart-shaped headlight dimmers. Prices range from under $15 for panties (including the booty shorts) to $80ish for some of the corsets and merrywidows. A pretty, retro-ish pleated chiffon nightie from Betsey Johnson is $78.
One more thing before I get to the consignment sales: Lewis and Clark, the outdoor outfitter, is closing its Midtowne store for good this Sunday. They’re moving most of the merchandise to other locations, so the going-out-of-business sale is limited: Most apparel is 40 percent to 60 percent off, as are Teva and Montrail shoes. Sunglasses and ski goggles are 40 percent off as well.
? OK, finally: Pre-sales for Rhea Lana’s North Little Rock consignment sale (at the former MM Cohn store in McCain Mall) kick off this Saturday, Feb. 28 (for consignors, volunteers and expectant moms — check the website, www.rhealana.com, for info on getting in). There’ll be enormous quantities of children’s clothing through junior sizes, plus toys, baby gear and baby furniture.
The public sale runs from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 1; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, March 2-4; 10 a.m.-3 p.m. March 5; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. March 6; and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 7. March 6-7 are half-price days.
Rhea Lana’s other Arkansas sale dates are: Conway, March 15-21; Hot Springs, March 19-21; and West Little Rock (in the former Linens and Things store on Bowman Road), April 1-4.
The other consignment behemoth, Duck Duck Goose, follows at the State Fairgrounds Hall of Industry March 12-14 (half-price on the 14th). This is the sale for early birds: Hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day, so you can run by before work. DDG also usually has a good selection of maternity and non-maternity women’s clothing. Other DDG sales in Arkansas are Feb. 26-28 in Conway (at the Conway Town Center on Highway 65N) and April 2-4 in Hot Springs (at the Crossgate Church on Highway 70). Check the Web site, www.duckduckgoosesale.com, for details.
