We know Senor Tequila is an institution around here, but we’d only eaten there once before the results of this year’s Best of Arkansas poll came in and we saw the Mexican restaurant chain had gotten votes for both best cheese dip and cheap date.
Is there a better combination? I don’t think so.
Much as we respect our readers’ opinions as a general rule, we had to go check this one out for ourselves. Our verdict, based on a lunchtime visit to the South University location and a Friday night trip out to Highway 10: We don’t necessarily agree, but we can see your point.
First, about the cheese dip. At dinner, at the Highway 10 location, it wasn’t bad at all. It actually tasted like cheese — a rarity. It’s the white kind, maybe a bit on the thin side, but all in all, we wouldn’t have argued with the People over their conclusions. But. The stuff they served us at the South University location a few days later was so watered down it was almost funny. You couldn’t taste it, you couldn’t even hardly keep any on your chip. We’re assuming they had a new guy on the line or something, because if that’s what y’all think is the best cheese dip in the state, well, we don’t even know.
Now about the cheap date business. Our first outing, we paid $29 before tip for two entrees (including a mound of tasty fajitas we ate off for the next two days), two margaritas (excellent, by the way, and they don’t skimp on the tequila) and the cheese dip. A reasonable price, sure, but if that’s what’s considered a cheap date these days, we need to get back out there. To be fair, though, it is in fact possible to eat much more cheaply at Senor Tequila — there’s a host of a la carte items, like single tacos and enchiladas, for under $5. Stick to water and chintz on the tip, and you might get out for under $10 for two.
