Curious? Not George, not McCain

Except in one admittedly troubling respect, John McCain is not a facsimile of George W. Bush, and his presidency would almost certainly not mirror the reign of the worst president ever.

Words, July 17

The latest issue of the Drug Policy News, published by the Drug Policy Education Group in Fayetteville, is full of information, about words as well as drug policy.

Ween

Though normally under no circumstances would I go up to Fayetteville to watch a concert in a mall parking lot, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to see what Ween would pull out of their frazzled brains last Friday night.

Dipping and dating: Si, si Senor

We know Senor Tequila is an institution around here, but we’d only eaten there once before the results of this year’s Best of Arkansas poll came in and we saw the Mexican restaurant chain had gotten votes for both best cheese dip and cheap date.

Colonial goes megastore

One of Little Rock’s distinguishing features, at least in my part of town, is the neighborhood liquor store — those little holes in the wall that are short on selection but always reliable for a quick pint of booze.

Editor’s choice

Again this year, the staff of the Times adds its own two cents’ worth to a slightly idiosyncratic discussion of the bests of Arkansas.

New gallery gets the nod

It’s been open only 16 months, but M2 Gallery has already won the title from the readers of the Arkansas Times of the best place to buy art in Little Rock.

How does your garden grow?

The most amazing thing about The Good Earth nursery — situated as it is on chi-chi, gotta have it, gazillion-dollars-a-square-millimeter land in far West Little Rock — might just be that it’s always been in the same spot.

Sales up along with neighborhood

I was a bit disappointed to discover that Don’s Weaponry, a runner-up in the best gun shop category, did not take top prize.

Sheats comes clean

First off, while you could easily make the mistake of thinking KARK news anchor Jancey Sheats is one of those tiny women, maybe even pixie-ish, she’s taller than you’d think.

We don't negotiate with terrorists, except when we do

The Obama haters have been gushing on for weeks about how we shouldn't "talking to terrorists," specifically Iran.    Now what is the Bush administration doing ?  Talking to IranJust like we will never have a timeline for troop withdrawal from Iraq.  Instead, let's just call it something different -- a "time horizon."     It just sounds better already doesn't it?

The November surprise

This worries me, too, along with long-standing worries about touch-screen voting machines. With millions of new voters heading to the polls this November and many states introducing new voting technologies, election officials and voting monitors say they fear the combination is likely to create long lines, stressed-out poll workers and late tallies on Election Day.

Woo, pork

Joel DiPippa is back. A few weeks ago, I bought a pork loin as my main protein for the week and decided to see what I would do with it before the week was out.  First up was a fairly simple preparation: Always present kitchen components, onions and garlic went into a pan with a little bit of butter to soften and carmelize a bit.  A few medallions, about 3-4 ounces  each, were given a light dusting  of salt and pepper before going into the cast iron skillet.  The red sauce is a standard quick and easy red sauce I make at home, with just a touch of  Monk Sauce to keep me on my toes.  Once the onions were mostly soft with some nice flavor, they went into the middle of the plate and were stretched across while the sauce crossed the other way.  The medallions, off the heat, out of the pan, and resting for a few minutes, were plated and the result was delicious.
