The HOGS. It’s come to this. The close margin of the season-ending loss to LSU was a bright spot. Wait until next year, by golly. (Unless you’re a Hog assistant coach. It’s your fault the $1.5 million head coach has had two straight losing seasons and some of you might not be around for another go.)

ARKANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY. The Indians will take their NCAA-challenged nickname and mascot to a bowl game, believe it or not. A 6-5 record gave them a piece of the Sun Belt championship and a bowl berth against somebody or another equally distinguished in a Dec. 20 game in Lafayette, La.

PUBLIC DISPLAYS OF AFFECTION. Little Rock Zoo gorillas have been mating. In public. Out in front of everybody, including the kids. Parents were warned of the amorous apes, zoo officials said. No word yet if the couplings produced pregnancies.

GUN NUTS. Candidates for attorney general took turns demonstrating who loved guns more, prompted by Dustin McDaniel’s boast that he was the only Democratic candidate with a hunting license. Robert Herzfeld promptly whipped out his concealed carry permit. Paul Suskie mentioned that he toted a gun to work in Afghanistan. See Brummett this week.

IT WAS A BAD WEEK FOR …

SHOPPING. Door-buster specials created plenty of excitement at discount stores, but early numbers indicate something less than a rip-roaring Christmas sales season at malls and specialty retailers. Maybe the economic boom is yet to be in evidence on the Internet.

PARTY LOYALTY. A conservative Republican group, including a couple of former state legislators, announced opposition to Gov. Mike Huckabee’s highway bond plan. It puts future generations into perpetual debt, former legislator Randy Minton said.
