Yesterday, Memphis director Craig Brewer announced “$5 Cover,” a new project focused on the Midtown Memphis music scene that he’s producing in partnership with MTV New Media, Memphis Flyer reported.

The series of short films, all apparently web-bound, will follow a local musician playing a slightly fictionalized version of himself and will revolve around a song by the featured artist.

The planned first episode, for instance, is called “A New Drummer,” and will star singer Amy LaVere in a romantic triangle with North Mississippi Allstars drummer Cody Dickinson and Memphis actress Claire Grant. When LaVere breaks up with Dickinson, she goes searching for a new drummer, with her song “Killing Him” at the center of the story.

Others slated to appear include LR native and Lucero frontman Ben Nichols, Al Kapone, Snowglobe’s Brad Postlethwaite and River City Tanlines’ Alicja Trout.

“Hustle and Flow” was terrible and “Black Snake Moan” wasn’t much better, but you gotta hand it to the dude for staying true to Memphis. This project sounds great.
