From “Goodbye, Solo”
Long time no check in. Since I’ve been gone, I’ve seen “Died Young, Stayed Pretty,” a documentary about rock poster artists filled with rich, distinctive visuals and interviews, but crippled by an editing style that spits everything up in one jumbled, decontextualized mess. I spent most of the film running through this progression: “Who’s talking? What’re they talking about? Who cares?”
This morning, I caught the first shorts program, which as shorts programs typically are, was a mixed bag. The best was a quick doc about houses made of shipping containers that can be shipped and “opened” into livable quarters with the push of a button.
Afterwards, I saw “Goodbye, Solo” in a packed theater. What a film. Best I’ve seen so far.
On my way out the door to catch “500 Days of Summer” and the Arkansas Music Video Competition afterwards. The Best Arkansas film and Best Short will be announced at the Crush after party tonight, too.
