We talk a lot about the big farmers markets here on the blog — the 35 year old Little Rock Farmers Market at the River Market and the Certified Arkansas Farmers Market in Argenta. But there are markets everywhere. For instance, Clinton has a big one the first and third Saturday of the summer months, and Eureka Springs has its markets on Tuesdays and Thursdays through the growing seasons. One to keep an eye on, though, is the new Bryant Farmers Market at Midtown. It’s not right on the main drag, so you need to make an effort to find it. I followed signs from the intersection of Reynolds Road and Highway Five last weekend… you take Commonwealth (the road that goes straight west from that intersection) all the way over to Farmers Market Drive and there it is. And what a nice facility — two long pavilions sandwiching a gorgeous little green space. The road around the little park is one-way, and there’s plenty of diagonal parking. Weren’t a whole lot of vendors by the time I got out there, just five or six, but I came home with fresh Red Haven peaches, a bucket-full of green tomatoes, a butternut and an acorn squash, and a loaf of whole wheat bread that had been fresh milled by the farmer himself and baked into bread the day before. I had the makings of a fine meal before I left there, and still had change in my pocket. It’s worth a shot — especially to see a little market like this thrive and make sense of the new facilities, some of the best I’ve seen for a farmers market outside of the River Market. It’s open every Saturday. For more information, call (501) 940-0177. Oh, and Bryant Midtown has a Facebook page.
