Crummy news travels fast. J.D. Salinger and Howard Zinn, two of the best things ever to happen to typewriters, both pass within 48 hours of each other and everyone’s inner 19-year old dies a little. We all know how these things come in threes, so here’s to hoping John Irving lays low for a bit. Also, to hoping Bret Easton Ellis stands too close to a fire and all his hot air explodes. [The AP]

The Mouse is kicking Miramax out of the house, leaving six movies in limbo, including another Shakespearean adaptation by Julie Taymor with “The Tempest” and—get this– Guillermo del Toro’s big screenification of SNICK staple “Are You Afraid of the Dark.” No word on if del Toro’s bagged Zeebo the Clown. Shane MacGowan, Nick Cave, Johnny Depp, Bobby Gillespie (Primal Scream) and Shane MacGowan’s new crazy horse teeth are scheduled to link together like a big, drunk Voltron to record Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ classic “I Put a Spell on You.” All proceeds off the single will be donated to Haitian relief. Something voodoo, something Haiti, something hooligan hedonists, something Pat Robertson joke. [The Guardian]
