On this note, I’m a huge fan of the original “Stagecoach.” It’s one of my favorite movies ever, hands down. Remember the country music remake from the ’80s? You know, Kris Kristofferson was The Ringo Kid, Johnny Cash played the marshall, Waylon Jennings was John Carradine’s character. So I watched the remake the other night and Willie Nelson played Doc Holliday. But Doc Holliday wasn’t in the original. The original John Ford one had Doc Boone, you see: the drunken doctor kicked out of town (alongside the prostitute, whose name escapes me) by the local morality brigade. Now, Doc Boone was played par excellence by Thomas Mitchell, easily one of the greatest actors ever. He really doesn’t get his due anymore, which is a shame. Anyway, what I’m getting at is that the change was pretty superfluous, don’t you think?
