More snow day musings:
If all goes as planned, tomorrow’s 2nd Friday Art Night event at the Arkansas Studies Institute will feature contemporary Native American art from the collection of retired UALR professor Dr. J.W. Wiggins, whose collection is at UALR’s Sequoyah Center.
Wiggins knows his artists and because his is a modern collection, the artists are identified. But according to this Feb. 3 story from the New York Times and the author’s subsequent blog post , museums that have exhibited work by American Indian artists, even those whose identity was known, have attributed the work to a tribe — as cultural artifact — rather than the individual artist.
