Hooo, leee, sheeeeeiiiit!
Out of nowhere, The White Water Tavern comes through with a last-minute booking of one of the best songwriters of the last, hell, 20 years? Longer? Is that how long ago the first Smog album came out? Dang.
Anyway, Bill Callahan released a dozen or so albums under the Smog moniker before eventually switching to using his given name long about aught-five. Callahan – along with label-mates Will Oldham and David Berman, of the now sadly defunct Silver Jews – is a towering figure among the inscrutable, furrowed-brow songwriter set.
If you dig downer dude music – Townes Van Zandt, Leonard Cohen, Fred Neil – do not miss this. It starts at 9 p.m. and is the bargain of the goddamn century at $8.
After the jump, Callahan playing “River Guard” in the back seat of a London cab.
