Miss Lisa Laws, with an appealing and delightful rendition of “Practically Perfect,” from “Mary Poppins,” captured the hearts of both the audience and the judges at Miss Gay Arkansas Newcomer Pageant Saturday night.

She was assisted by dancers Ryan Whitfield and Carolyn Holt. Miss Blaze Duvall won first alternate, winning them both a trip to Miss Gay Arkansas America on Aug. 18 at the Argenta Community Theater in the historic Argenta District of North Little Rock.

The Miss Gay Arkansas Newcomer Pageant consists of a male interview in the afternoon, where contestants answer questions in their normal male personas regarding their qualifications, future plans, etc. — much like a job interview. The male interview portion of the pageant is done with only the judges and the contestants present.

In the evening, an evening gown, on-stage question and talent portion is performed by all of the contestants in front of judges and a live audience. This year, the pageant was held at Triniti Nightclub, adjacent to Discovery night club in Little Rock. The promoters of the Miss Gay Arkansas Newcomer pageant are Lindy Bass, Kamrin Mikaels, and Kelly Cruise. Also featured during the pageant was Miss Gay Arkansas 2012 Zia Dyor and several past preliminary pageant winners from this year.
