Gov. Mike Beebe’s office announced today that the governor has named printmaking artist Evan Lindquist of Jonesboro as the 2013 Artist Laureate for the state of Arkansas.
Lindquist, a former art professor at Arkansas State University who in 2010 was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by The Society of American Graphic Artists (SAGA), is known for his calligraphic line in his etchings. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Uffizi in Florence, the Whitney Museum in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and other important museums.
Ex-Sen. Paul Bookout, D-Jonesboro, introduced the bill to create the new laureate position in this year’s legislative session. Arkansas law now allows the governor to designate an visual, performing or literary artist as laureate. Arkansas’s poet laureate law was enacted in 1923; Peggy Caudle Vining has been poet laureate since 2003. The artist laureate position is for four years, so Lindquist’s term runs through Aug. 15, 2017.
