A double-sided watercolor by Andrew Wyeth was the sale of note from last week’s American Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture auction at Sotheby’s, bringing in three times its estimate. “Lobsterman (Walt Anderson),” and, verso, the beautiful “Two Figures in a Dory” sold for $197,000, though the estimate was $35,000-$45,000. Whenever something sells for more than its estimate, we think of Alice. The watercolor is 21 by 26 1/4 inches.

The pre-sale star of the show had been a small William Trost Richards’ seascape, “Rocky Surf off Rhode Island,” which sold for $155,000, just a tad more  than expected. Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art has a gorgeous, large Richards’ seascape, a scene of crashing, translucent pale green waves.
