From The Capital Hotel

It makes regular appearances here in our writing and reporting, and it’s certainly not the last you’ll hear about it, but there’s a lot of pie going on in this state. I, like every other human soul on this planet, love pie. What’s not to love, really?

The powers-that-be have decided that pie is so important to the American people that February has been declared “National Pie Month.” Let us all rejoice! Now we all know there is a wealth of fantastic pie around Arkansas…I think someone even wrote a book about it or something. No need to rehash all the great pies around town at this point, you probably already have a few favorites of your own.

But one group of folks is rising to the challenge this coming month, making National Pie Month something actually worth celebrating. The Capital Bar & Grill‘s February ode to pie is one of the most ambitious endeavors the pie world has seen in some time.

For each day in February, CBG will be offing a new pie for dessert—that’s 28 days, 28 pies.

This all comes courtesy of The Capital’s current pastry chef, Jamie Hornby, and CBG chef, Zach Pullam. You may or may not know already this, but Beard Award-nominated pastry chef Tandra Watkins left the hotel a few months back, and Hornby has stepped in to take her place. And apparently, she’s handling the new role quite well.

You’ll find some interesting pies on the agenda for this month, take a look above. If you’re wondering where I might be on Feb. 10…you may want to look for a guy pounding down a few slices of “Malted Walnut” pie.

And like they are saying at The Capital all this next month, “Yippee-pie-yi-yay.”
