The Bentonville Square will host the third annual World Championship Squirrel Cook-off at 9 a.m. on Sept. 13. Competing teams will hail from around the country, and judges boasting a variety of qualifications will munch their griddled rodents, according to an event press release:
“Local and internationally-recognized food writers and bloggers, award-winning chefs, reality television stars and Bentonville and Arkansas dignitaries will taste each squirrel-infused dish and…name the 2014 World Championship Squirrel Cook-off winner. The public will get to sample some of the squirrel dishes as well.”
The release also calls the championship, “the only known squirrel cooking competition,” as well as “one that brings back fond childhood memories for a lot of hunters whose first experience was hunting with their father and/or grandfather.”

Bentonville will also host the second annual Bacon Bowl that Saturday in Lawrence Plaza. “Teams consisting of chefs and amateur cooks will compete in Entrée and Dessert Divisions and test their culinary skills by creating innovative bacon creations featuring Arkansas’s own Petit Jean Meats bacon,” according to the Bacon Bowl’s website.
Registration to compete in the Bowl will remain open until Friday, Sept. 5. Visit baconbowl.net for details.
