From the depths of the Arkansas Times archives, here’s our February 1975 profile of Colt, Ark. native Charlie Rich, written by Larry Mougeot back when the paper was still called the Union Station Times

Subjects discussed include his gospel roots, why he took up piano (“Piano players made more money”), the failure of his cotton crop in West Memphis, his mother (who “lives at Forrest City and still plays the piano and the organ at church sometimes”) and a week-long stint he played at a Little Rock venue called the Balcony Club in 1971 (Apparently hardly anybody came).
