In the five years that the Good Food Awards have been around, there have been exactly zero winners from the state of Arkansas — until this year. The awards were founded by a group of farmers, food producers, food industry folks, and food journalists and organized by Seedling Projects. The goal is to showcase great food from all over the country in a very complete set of categories:  Beer, charcuterie, chocolate, coffee, confections, honey, oils, pickles, preserves and spirits. It usually has a swanky awards ceremony in San Fancisco hosted by food royalty like Alice Waters. It’s kind of a big deal.

And this year, Onyx Coffee Lab  (locations in both Fayetteville and Springdale) brought home one of those awards with their Julio’s El Zapote Gesha coffee. How stiff was the competition? Well Onyx was one of 16 winners drawn from a pool of thousands. That’s enough coffee to send a person into orbit around the sun.


The award winning coffee isn’t currently available for purchase, but Onyx confirms that they will be releasing a limited quantity for sale at the end of February. In the meantime, you all can check out their other available roasts — I’m sure you’ll find something to like. This was Onyx’s first year participating in the Good Food Awards, but with a showing like that, I’m sure it wasn’t beginner’s luck.
