I absolutely love a great breakfast. It gets me started, and in most cases, carries me throughout my day. Of course, being a guy, I love huge portions and bold flavors. That is why I spent so many mornings at Jack’s House, which was a favorite breakfast place of mine. They had lunch also, but it was the breakfast that kept me coming. But unfortunately, Jack sold his business, and as a result, the food took a turn for the worse. Recently, the place has returned to the family, although with a new name. The same great flavors of the past are back, though, and the new Megan’s Diner has a promising future.
Greg and Monica Short, along with their daughter Megan, have revitalized what once was a go to place for breakfast and lunch lovers. Megan’s Diner has that comfortable feel that we all love about family and privately owned establishments. I live just a few minutes down the road from them, so I am a frequent Saturday or Sunday visitor. I have yet to be disappointed on any visit to Megan’s, and honestly, I don’t think that I ever will be.
Being a guy who loves huge portions, I first went to Megan’s to try the breakfast buffet. When I walked in, I was told to go ahead and seat myself, which is fine with me. On my way to a booth in the corner, I saw a couple eating huge pancakes and platter sized omelets. So I decided to just to order from the menu. My choice was the spinach omelet with country fries, and I substituted pancakes for biscuits. While I waited for my food, I saw others being served their meals, and the food looked amazing.
My wait was maybe 10 minutes. Now, I went there thinking of trying the buffet, but after seeing the size of my omelet and pancakes, I knew that I would have trouble just to finish it all. My potatoes were perfectly seasoned—not even a dash of salt was needed. The two pancakes were large (to say the least) and were light and fluffy with just the right amount of sweetness.
Now to the omelet. This thing was very large, and was stuffed with spinach, mozzarella cheese, tomatoes, mushrooms and covered with grilled chicken. All the flavors were great together. This was food that you could taste the love in. We talk all the time about putting love into food, or tasting the love in the food. It comes from food that was prepared by someone who loves to feed people, and someone who loves food. They take pride in it, and the love comes through in the flavors of the food. That is what I taste when I go to Megan’s Diner. I have made many trips to Megan’s, and there are many more trips to come. Because of my work schedule, I haven’t had a chance to try the lunch menu yet, but if the breakfast is an indicator, the lunch has to be great too.
Hot Springs has more than it’s share of national chain restaurants, and that is ok. But if you want a great meal, prepared by a family that loves food, loves their customers, and makes sure you are satisfied on every visit, give Megan’s Diner a try. You will not be disappointed.
