What a fabulous late morning/early Sunday afternoon on South Main Street. In just a few blocks we walked by a full house at Community Bakery, saw folks streaming into South on Main and stopped for brunch at Raduno before trekked past a packed Root Cafe, then on to South Main Creative, across the street to Moxy and then lingering at the Bernice Garden farmer’s market, where we nabbed a quart of Arkansas strawberries, an amazing homemade oatmeal cream pie from Twiggy’s and a nice ale form Stone’s Throw. Boulevard Bread opens on Sunday only when it’s farmer’s market season, and along with the Green Corner Store, it was busy, too.
At Raduno we enjoyed a couple of $6 mimosas, full glasses of bubbly with
just a splash of juice (cranberry for us) and two entrees. We are a sucker for biscuits and gravy ($9 for the two-biscuit plate load at Raduno), particularly when the biscuits are crumbly, not too dense and are drowned in plenty of cream gravy, in this case fennel/sausage gravy, though the fennel shone through more than the bits of sausage. Our dining mate proclaimed topping all this with two sunny side up eggs “genius,” and we can’t argue.
The chorizo and potato pizza ($13, though the web menu still says $11) isn’t particularly “brunchy,” but who cares. Raduno’s crust is the best in town, crispy on the bottom and chewy around the edges. We could have used more of the finely ground chorizo, and the very thinly sliced potato didn’t add that much taste, but the green onions added a nice touch, and it was a fine pizza overall.
We finished with a slab of lemon Italian cream cake ($7), created by Zara Wilkerson, the acclaimed local pastry chef.
The Raduno brunch menu isn’t huge, but we enjoyed all we had. And the full menu is available. With all the general Sunday midday buzz in SOMA, it’s worth heading down no matter where you choose to eat/drink. It’s nice to have so many great options.
