Jonesboro angst champions Tiny Towns have dropped a slick and foreboding new song entitled “Waves.” The single, which relies on a swift, staccato and almost dissonant alternation of notes, starts with a slightly more optimistic question than the band is usually known for: “Is it really that bad to not know who you are?” However, the illusion of equanimity doesn’t last long. By verse two, they’re back to their gloomy and seductive old tricks: “Don’t it hurt so bad to know just how wrong you’ve really been?” It’s unclear whether the singer is questioning himself, or if he’s interrogating an unfaithful friend or lover, but either way, I imagine these self-deprecating reflections or accusatory conversations taking place far after midnight, when everyone at the party is a little too drunk or high and can’t keep their shit together anymore.
