John Cusack

Actor John Cusack, perhaps best known for his boombox-wielding moment in “Say Anything… ,” is coming to the Robinson Center on Friday, Sept. 15 and the Walton Arts Center in Fayetteville on Sunday, Oct. 29. Cusack will speak at a screening of “Sixteen Candles” for both events.

Though Cusack’s role in the 1984 film is minor, it was one of his first major movies and his sister was also in the cast, meaning there’s a good chance memories of his time on set will have stuck to him vividly.

My favorite performance by Cusack is in one of his lesser-known parts, as Brian Wilson in 2015’s “Love & Mercy.” The film has a split timeline between the 1960s and 1980s and Cusack plays the latter version of the Beach Boys creative leader when he’s lost and overmedicated by a predatory personal doctor, and he imbues the role with a listless sweetness that I don’t know if anyone else could quite pull off.
