It’s a good thing it’s cheaper during the off season, because right now it feels sort of like an Arkansas winter – minus the snow. Even so, there is something special about the wind, the waves, the trees swaying, no matter what the temperature may be.
We haven’t had a vacation in some years, and so this year wanted to really get away rom it all. And Dauphin Island, Alabama, with normal December temperatures of 80 degrees, seemed ideal. Well, it didn’t quite work out that way, but it it is still worth it, just to get away from it all.
Away from cable news, with 2016 election coverage 24 hours a day; I often wonder if the more we know about the utterances of the candidates, the less we actually know about the rest of the world.
Away from the incessant ringing of the telephone – not that I am in the habit of answering the damn thing at the best of times. If you try to call right now, all you’ll get is a busy signal, since the answering machine is turned off.
Away – for the most part – from the vile postings of individuals on Facebook who honestly believe that schoolyard insults put them in the same intellectual league as Mark Twain.
Away from my own addiction to the news – okay, I still read the BBC new site every day, and still get the news offerings of KFSM sent to my email – when I bother to check my damn email account.
But for this week, we are tourists. We explore, walk along the beach, and sleep late. I am working on my manuscripts and catching up on some reading – not Great Literature, just some novels which have been gathering dust waiting for me to to get to them.
And tonight Tracy will open a bottle of wine and welcome in the New Year.
Happy New Year, and I hope your New Year is as restful as ours.
While I think the phrase “shout out” is kinda dumb, I’m more than happy to give one to Barnacle Bill’s, one of the best seafood restaurants I have ever eaten at. If you ever make it to Dauphin Island, it would be a crime against humanity if you didn’t pay them a visit at least once.
Today’s blog was written with the help of an excellent 24 hour a day jazz station – Jazz 24 – which can be found online at http://v6.player.abacast.net/854.
At this moment, Jackie Ryan is singing “You’d be so nice to come home to.”
Ah . . . screw the cold wind. This is Heaven. I’ll be listening to this station in Fayetteville.
2016 – The Year of On the Air with Richard S. Drake
January 1, 2016 marks 25 years of “On the Air with Richard S. Drake.” It’s my show, and I can turn the whole show into a celebration, if I want to.
And I’m gonna . . .
Quote of the Day
Never does the human soul appear so strong and noble as when it foregoes revenge and dares to forgive an injury. – E.H. Chapin
