Compromise 'religion' bill becomes law; session ends

Gov. Asa Hutchinson has signed SB 975, a compromise version of the bill originally aimed at creating a religious pretext to discriminate against gay people. The House passed SB 975 earlier this afternoon, 76-17, with two voting present.

Arguments were scheduled this morning before the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on the state's appeal of federal Judge Susan Webber Wright's invalidation of the 2013 Arkansas law banning virtually all abortions at the 12th week of pregnancy.

Drug test bill fails in committee

A bill by Sen. Bill Pritchard, R-Elkins, that would require a drug test before someone could receive unemployment benefits from the state failed in the Senate Public Health, Welfare and Labor committee late this morning on a voice vote. Pritchard said he did not call for a voice vote because he "knew where the votes were." Holly Dickson, of ACLU Arkansas, spoke against the bill saying it was unconstitutional.

ACLU break-in

Someone broke into the American Civil Liberties Union of Arkansas offices between late Friday night and 3 p.m. Saturday, taking four computers and a small, undisclosed amount of cash, ACLU Executive Director Rita Sklar said Saturday afternoon.
