The problem with trained, armed officers: See Paragould

The notion advanced by NRA and Asa Hutchinson — that the world is oversupplied with reliable volunteers who can be counted on to staff every school in America as armed guards — is dubious on several counts, beginning with the practical problem of assuring that trustworthy people will show up and that replacements are ready when they are sick, on vacation, etc. Then there is the notion that an armed civilian, after a little NRA safety course, is a guarantee of good judgment in this most sensitive of roles with very vulnerable charges.

Cops don't like being on camera

In light of the pummeling a Little Rock cop gave a bar patron who disrespected him the other night — caught in unflattering fullness on video — you can understand the rising resistance around the country by cops to use of recording devices on their actions.

The eagle is flying

And the Friday night line is open. Final words: * KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: Perhaps inspired by the Occupy Wall Street and similar demonstrations, the ACLU of Arkansas has prepared materials to arm those about to embark on free speech, assembly and demonstration of grievances.

Company to change filtering of gay sites UPDATE

The ACLU, which has brought complaints nationwide, including in Arkansas, about schools that use web filters to block access to educational websites about sexuality, says one major supplier of such filters is going to remove the objectionable portion of the filter. The eStem Charter School in Little Rock has changed its filter in response.

More on Internet filtering at LR schools

I've continued to exchange notes with John Bacon, who heads the eStem Public Charter School, over the ACLU complaint that eStem and the Little Rock School District had placed filters on school computer networks that blocked access to legitimate, educational websites about homosexuality — support groups for gay kids, for example.
