Hot Springs city board extends anti-discrimination protections for LGBT city workers, requires same of contractors

The Hot Springs Board of Directors voted last night to pass an ordinance which would extend anti-discrimination protections to include LGBT city workers, and require any vendors who contract with the city to do the same. The ordinance is similar to one passed last month by the Little Rock board.

Ark. transgender group receives $15k grant to study trans health

Andrea Zekis with the Arkansas Trans Equality Coalition announced today that the group has received a $15,000 grant from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute in Washington D.C. The grant will be used to research ways to better serve the medical needs of the trans community in Arkansas, in partnership with UAMS in Little Rock.

DiPippa: proposed 'fix' bills for HB 1228 won't prevent potential discrimination

We reached out this morning to UA's William H. Bowen School of Law Dean Emeritus John DiPippa to get his take on the two HB 1228 "fix" bills passed last night by the Senate — SB 229 and SB 975 — after Gov. Asa Hutchinson asked the legislature to recall the bill. His opinion: the "fix" isn't much of a fix if the goal is to prevent discrimination.

We spoke this morning about the potential impact of HB 1228 with attorney John DiPippa, Dean Emeritus and Distinguished Professor of Law and Public Policy at William H. Bowen School of Law in Little Rock. DiPippa joined the faculty in 1983 and became dean of the law school in 2009. He currently teaches constitutional law, interviewing and counseling, legal profession and public service law classes at the law school.

Gap, Levi Strauss join companies, business leaders calling for HB1228 veto

Yesterday, iconic blue jeans maker Levi Strauss & Co. and known purveyor of jeans Gap Inc. issued a joint statement condemning Arkansas's anti-gay House Bill 1228 and similar legislation recently signed into law in Indiana, saying of the laws "they must be stopped."
