Arvest Bank, the Walton banking enterprise, is acquiring Bear State Financial, led by Richard Massey, for $391 million, all cash. Bear State, based in Arkansas, has 42 branches and other operations in Arkansas, Missouri and Oklahoma.

Former Arvest Bank official sentenced to eight years in federal prison for bank fraud

Arkansas Business reports that H. Dennis Smiley Jr. was sentenced today to 97 months in federal prison. Smiley, the former president of Arvest Bank's Benton County market, pleaded guilty to bank fraud last August. Smiley was also ordered to pay restitution of $4.9 million and two years of supervised release will follow his prison sentence.

Arvest denies knowledge of documents involved in fraud case

Arkansas Business has been ahead of the rest of state media in coverage of a loan fraud investigation involving Dennis Smiley, former CEO of Arvest operations in Benton County. Today it has a report related to a document purportedly signed by another Arvest official that allowed Smiley to use Arvest stock as collateral on a loan at another bank. Arvest disclaims knowledge.
