Guest Mix: High Lonesome

I guess you could say that this list is sort of a "what are they listening to now," with some old favorites peppered in. We each picked 4 songs a piece, and if you know us personally, you could probably guess who picked what. These are the songs that we sing and play air-guitar to in our undies.

I try to listen to music constantly. I don't listen to as much creepingly heavy metal as one would think, and when I do it's an entire album at a time instead of mixed up. Any mixtape I make usually has Paige Anderson and the Fearless Kin on it. I also LOVE soft rock hits. I have entire comps put together of this stuff, I can't make a comp without some.

This is my Saturday night/Sunday morning mix. At my house, marking the ebb and flow of days is almost ritual. For years, my wife Robyn and I did not officially end our week and signal the beginning of the weekend without dropping the needle on Hound Dog Taylor’s "Genuine House Rocking Music" LP.

Romance ruins everything. It pervades into every fiber of our social tapestry and fills our minds with the mirage that is wholeness. We are obsessed with “having it all”, whatever that means individually. And when we cannot have it, we feel a varying sense of loss that often propels us toward self injury. At many different points in my stumble I have felt this pang.

I've never been a good dj really, always throwing in a Rossini aria or some spoken word ballad by Johnny Cash at a late night party, but I do listen to music constantly and had fun putting this list together. I narrowed it down to music I'm listening to a lot this week, some of my all time favorites, and mostly (hopefully) a playlist that others might enjoy.

Here's a collection of 9 records that's really had an effect on my career. These records have touched me in many ways ... some are very personal and even disturbing at times when I hear them, because of certain situations I been through where those records were playing in the background. I'm proud to share this 9 track soundtrack with Arkansas Times because these records mean so much to me and I hope you enjoy!!!

This mix came about like most do: I grabbed a stack of records — some recent acquisitions some not so — that included tunes I'm currently obsessed with, put a tape in the deck, started mixing without a plan, and then tried to stop by the time the tape ran out.

In addition to the new and amazing Ty Segall album, here are some songs that we're currently listening to and passing back and forth as we're working on songs for our new LP. Some of them are real jammers and some are more low key, so just sit back and let the vibes do their thing. And don't think about the fact that we just said "vibes."

For the last seven years it seems most of my time has been spent in my van. Before that it seems most of it was spent on a platform in Mars like temperatures waiting on the blue line. Before that it seems much of it was in my kitchen doing paintings for school. My point is, the songs best suited for a hangover are best suited for the Snake.
