On Thursday evening, Mayor Frank Scott Jr. gave his second state of the city address at Heifer International and shared his administration’s plans to “lift Little Rock” in the next year, including through a penny sales tax initiative that the mayor said would raise approximately $50 million annually for “specific quality of life initiatives.”

Board of directors hears parks, zoo task force recommendations

The Little Rock Board of Directors was presented with recommendations from two task forces on the futures of Hindman and War Memorial parks and the Little Rock Zoo. Mayor Frank Scott Jr. also pulled an ordinance from the agenda that would have allowed the city to enter into a two-year contract with Ace Glass Recycling for curbside glass recycling services.

Board of directors defers votes on 2020 budget, glass recycling contract

The Little Rock Board of Directors voted to defer its vote on Mayor Frank Scott Jr.'s proposed $276 million budget for 2020 until Dec. 3. The board also voted to defer a resolution that would allow the city to contract with Ace Glass Recycling for residential curbside glass recycling services.

In a meeting Tuesday afternoon, Public Works Director Jon Honeywell presented the Little Rock Board of Directors with ACE Glass's response to a Request For Proposal for a glass recycling contract with the city that the board asked to be issued earlier this year. ACE Glass's proposal would charge an additional $3.29 per household, per month for curbside glass recycling services on top of the city's $28.90 monthly solid waste fee, totaling a monthly fee of $32.39.

Board of directors approves employee health care plan, reviews 2020 budget and government structure recommendations

In a meeting Tuesday afternoon, the Little Rock Board of Directors voted unanimously to accept Mayor Frank Scott Jr.’s proposed $15 million city employee health care plan for 2020. The city will remain under its “fully insured” plan with United Healthcare, and because of a 15 percent increase in insurance costs over the last year, employees will be asked to pay a premium for their coverage for the first time in the city’s history. Directors also received the first draft of the 2020 budget and reviewed the recommendations of the Little Rock Governance Structure Study Group.

In a meeting Tuesday evening, Mayor Frank Scott Jr. proposed to the Little Rock Board of Directors that the city remain under a “fully insured” health care plan with United Health Care, which currently provides health insurance for city employees. After a 15 percent increase in the cost of insurance premiums over the last year, the city would pay “no more” than $15 million for employee healthcare in 2020.

Board of directors to discuss Airbnb regulation next week

In a meeting Tuesday afternoon, the Little Rock Board of Directors slated two ordinances for next week's agenda that could change zoning for two properties operating as "short-term rentals" in Ward 3. Directors also received an update on the city's health care plan and were presented with two options for what city employees' insurance could look like in 2020.

Board of directors begins 2020 budget talks

In a meeting Tuesday afternoon, the Little Rock Board of Directors began discussions about the 2020 budget for the city. Mayor Frank Scott Jr. said that while previous administrations have started such discussions later in the fall, with a budget normally adopted by the second week of December, it’s his “aggressive goal” to adopt the 2020 budget at the board’s Nov. 19 meeting. 

Dreamland Film Series to screen HBO's "Insecure," host panel with producers

The Arkansas Cinema Society's Dreamland Film series will begin on Saturday, Sept. 28 with a two-hour screening of HBO's "Insecure," followed by a panel moderated by Mayor Frank Scott Jr. and columnist Philip Martin with producers Deniese Davis and Jayme Lemmons.
