Featured Program: Academy Award Semifinalist for Best Documentary: Can Mr. Smith Get to Washington Anymore?
 
Jeff Smith, State Senator from Missouri’s fourth district and star of the documentary, Can Mr. Smith Get to Washington Anymore?, a film about a young unknown taking on an American political dynasty.
 
What:  Movie screening and discussion of Can Mr. Smith Get to Washington Anymore? The film chronicles Smith’s run for the 2004 Democratic nomination for the U.S. Congressional seat vacated by popular incumbent Dick Gephardt. At the time of the campaign, Smith is an unkown, 29-year-old political science professor taking on Russ Carnahan, scion of Missouri’s most powerful political dynasty. Having lost his bid, Smith now represents Missouri’s fourth state senate district in St. Louis. He still teaches political science at Washington University and has a passion to improve urban education. In 2001, along with Susan Uchitelle and Sarah Smith, he co-founded the Confluence Academies, a group of urban public charter schools.
