“Hateful Things”: Racist memorabilia at Mosaic Templars

By Leslie Newell Peacock

9 a.m.-5 p.m. Tue.-Sat., reception 5:30 p.m. Sept. 19

The Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia

“Hateful Things,” an exhibition from the collection of the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia in Big Rapids, Mich., opens with a reception at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 19 and talk by Jim Crow Museum founder/director David Pilgrim.

The exhibition is being held in remembrance of the Elaine Massacre of Sept. 30, 1919, in which perhaps hundreds of African American farmers and others in Phillips County were slain by white posses.

Items in the show include derogatory caricatures on such things as labels, calendars, games and other items. The works are accompanied by a panel explaining its history.

Pianist Linda Holzer will perform the 1920 piece “Fantasie Negre” by Florence Price; the Mosaic Templars’ press release says that many believe it was written in remembrance of the killings at Elaine. Pilgrim will speak afterward.
