Jan Gosnell: “Good Humor”

By Leslie Newell Peacock

10 a.m.-5 p.m. Wed.-Fri., 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Sat. Sept. 4-28

Jan Gosnell, "Good Humor" artist

Fayetteville artist Jan Gosnell works backward, Fenix Fayetteville says, from most artists in that he creates a title before creating an image, and uses that title as inspiration. (Fenix notes that artists sometimes dislike titles added to their pieces by galleries because it may limit the viewer’s ideas about the work.) From the press release:

His choices for titles and imagery are arrived at by happenstance and are chosen for the reason that they pictorially challenge him in both the intuitive sense and the demand for a certain disciplined application of skill. …

The significance of his work, in the universal sense, he best describes with the word integrity. As a painter, it is of utmost importance to him that each of his pictures reflects a sincere effort to arrive at some degree of aesthetic, intellectual, and emotional truth. It is only by this standard that he perceives his work to be part of the history of art and a contribution to the community of man.

The title of the show reflects the sometimes intentional, sometimes incidental humor in his work. A reception opens the show 5-8 p.m. Sept. 5, Fayetteville’s First Thursday art event.
