FRIDAY 11/1. 5-8 p.m. New Deal Studios & Gallery.
The Compassion Works for All nonprofit, which works with the incarcerated to teach such self-help tools as meditation and conflict resolution, created this exhibition of essays by prisoners paired with works by more than 20 Arkansas artists. Prisoners from across the country submitted photos and writing to Compassion Works; Arkansas painters, printmakers and sculptors selected the stories they wished to interpret. Among the participating artists are Alice Ayers, Diane Page Harper, Laura Brainard Raborn, John Kushmaul, Katherine Strause, Dominique Simmons, Jennifer Perren, Jose Hernandez, Omaya Jones and Zina Al-Shukuri. A reception opens the show as part of SOMA After Dark. Light refreshments will be served, and attendees will get a chance to hear the artists speak about their pieces. The show continues 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at New Deal, 2001 S. Louisiana St.
