Stueart Pennington World Championship Running of the Tubs

While the Running of the Tubs is perhaps not quite as globally popular a bucket list item as its Spanish cousin, the Running of the Bulls, the quirky Hot Springs competition is nonetheless well worth your time. This 14th annual iteration of the event, created by Hot Springs merchant Stueart Pennington, will, as always, feature industrious groups of costumed individuals sprinting through Historic Downtown Hot Springs pushing modified bathtubs. If you’re having trouble picturing it, imagine the beginning of a bobsled race when everyone holds onto a pole and pushes the sled forward, then replace the world-class athletes with extravagantly dressed Arkansans and the sleek sleds with decorated bathtubs. Onlookers are encouraged to pelt the tubbers with water balloons, spray them with water guns, and generally cultivate a wet and wild atmosphere. Begun in an effort to honor the city’s historic bathhouses, including Hot Springs’s endearingly creepy proclamation that “We Bathe the World!”, the World Championship Running of the Tubs joins forces with the World’s Shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade to make Hot Springs a top destination if you’re looking for idiosyncratic downtown celebrations.
