"Hope Has Feathers," by Tessa Davidson.

Tessa Davidson of Cabot, assistant professor of art at Harding University in Searcy, is exhibiting 12 oils and a video projection at Argenta Gallery that highlight, the artist writes on her website, “humanity’s ongoing existential quest for hope, meaning, trust and belief. The imagery of St. Francis of Assisi’s imagery includes birds; Davidson’s “Hope has Feathers (for Francis)” in her year-long “Saints Re-Formed” project depicts a shirtless man in jeans and surrounded by birds. (The title appropriates Emily Dickinson’s “Hope is the Thing with Feathers”: Hope is the thing with feathers / That perches in the soul / And sings the tune without the words / And never stops — at all.)

Davidson’s models are neighbors who “are remarkable examples of strength and character,” she says. A sample of other images in the “Saints” project: “Truth Be Told (for John),” a man with duct tape over his mouth and headphones blocking wired tin-can phones; “The Keeper (for Ambrose),” a man pouring honey over his head; and a modern-day St. Lucy, candles on her hand and gas cans in her hands.

Davidson holds a master of fine arts degree from the New Hampshire Institute of Art, a master’s degree from UA Little Rock and an undergraduate degree from Harding University. Her painting “Under the Wings,” showing a hefty guy wearing orange water wings, appeared in the 2018 Delta Exhibition at the Arkansas Arts Center.

A reception will be held 5-8 p.m. Nov. 17 as part of Third Friday Argenta Artwalk.
